TWILIGHT:
The competition was sponsored by TICEHURST TIMBER each player only allowed three clubs and a putter. Makes you wonder Graham, why we carry all those clubs around, when you can scored 29 points with only four. Next were Nigel Bailey 24, Dennis Fenwick and Simon Diplock 22, and Duncan Pincock with 21.
The funeral for Barry Hare was well attended by members of the Club. Barry was a very popular member of the Club and over the years had spent many ‘volunteer’ hours helping at the Club. In particular, with help from Buster Juno, keeping the waterways clear until he could no longer manage the task. John Lett spoke in commemoration of Barry on behalf of the Club.
The Club received a note from a Wellington visitor which is reproduced here.
“Congratulations on your super golf course – attractive surroundings – trees, cows peeping over the fence and the mountains in the background. Greens in excellent condition & fairways beautifully mown and varied. Will be back again to enjoy it and maybe play better golf. Thank you, A. Johnstone, Wellington.”
There is nothing more to add.
The Club has appointed an apprentice green keeper, Danny Brown. Danny comes from Masterton and has just completed College. I understand he is a go ahead young man who had previously got himself a part time job with a local trucking firm cleaning their trucks when they return to the depot – sometimes in the late evening.
Congratulations to our golfers who competed in the ‘Champion of Champions’ at the Karori course last week and acquitted themselves very well. The team of Graham Hutchby, Brayden Mazey and Gillies Baker came third overall with Brayden taking out second place in the Open Section. Katie Smart once again showed her golfing prowess by coming in with the Best nett in the afternoon round, at Martinborough the previous week.
The Club has received several letters from the Wellington regional Council with regard to the renewal of our consents to take water for use on the golf course. As part of the renewal of the consents and in keeping with the governments new policy about water conservation, the Club will be required to monitor the amount of water we use. Water used for the watering of the course is taken from the Spring in the ‘swamp’ and in future will have a gauge fitted to measure the amount of water we take. Results will reflect on the decision to renew our consent. Quotes have been received for work to install the meter, which will be a further strain on the Club’s finances.
A suggestion was received from Geoff Rolls that a plaque be erected to commemorate the Centennial of the Club. The committee agreed with the proposal and approval given to get the sign made. The next stage will be to decide where to erect it, I’m sure there will be plenty of suggestions!.
To get the record straight.
A number of rumours have been floating around about the tournament held at the Club to raise money for Brayden Mazey’s trip the China. It has been rumoured the Club had provided no support to the competition. As usual there is only half the story. The Club was first approached with a request for us to run the tournament. After advice received from the NZ Golf Association the Club declined. The advice was to the effect that it would effect the status of Brayden as an amateur if money was raised solely for the benefit of Brayden. A tournament could be approved to raise money for ‘Junior Golf’ but the dispersal of that money would be controlled by NZ Golf. There was no guarantee the money would find it’s way to Brayden. Whilst the Club could have ignored the advice it was felt the Club, all things considered, could not be involved in the tournament. Subsequently a request was received for a tournament to be run at the Golf Course which did not require input from the Club. This was agreed to by the Club which also agreed to close the course for the day of the tournament. The fact that senior members of golf’s hierarchy attended the tournament is entirely at their own choice and does not have any bearing on the official advice received by the Club.
