EXTRAS

As mentioned in the last results the Saturday Pig Roast was a great success, apart for Greg Martin. Poor guy provided the pig and then just because he wore his Aussie Rugby shirt got abused for his trouble. There’s no gratitude eh Greg? The Centenary Committee held its’ first meeting in preparation for next years celebration. The Labour Day weekend has been selected. The Rugby World Cup Final is on the Sunday but the organized part of the weekend will be over by kick-off. It has not been finalized yet, but it could present a problem getting a guest speaker with most of the ‘celebrities’ will probably be at the game. If you have any ideas let’s hear them. Although it is a long way off, get hold of the old members you know and encourage them to come along. Details will be promulgated as they are finalized

Pat Carew

Pats’ funeral was held at Saint Mary’s on Monday 19 July. The funeral was very well attended by members of the Club to farewell Pat. Bill Shakespeare presented an excellent tribute to Pat on behalf of the club, which is reproduced below.

Good Afternoon. My name is Bill Shakespeare and it is my privilege to speak today on behalf of the Carterton Golf Club and to express the Clubs gratitude for the time and effort Pat put into our organization. Pat joined the Carterton Golf Club in 1989, it was not long before his talents were recognized and he was elected to the main committee. In 1994, having retired, Pat was appointed Club Secretary/Manager of our Club, a position he held for 3 years. In 2000 he was appointed handicapper a position he relinquished in January this year. In all of these positions he carried out his duties with diligence and attention to detail, and, if required would freely offer advice , not only on the management side, but also in regard to the laws of golf. In between times Pat was also involved in converting our number five hole from a par four to a par five. His golf flourished. He was a member of the Clubs Senior Interclub team, standing down only when they gained promotion to a higher grade, where 36 holes per day were played instead of 18, with the current 36 holes is for the younger players. In 2004 Pat was presented with the Personality Cup, a trophy given each year to a member who is deemed to have made a major contribution to the Club. 2008 was a special year. Firstly his outstanding contribution to golf and the Carterton Golf Club was recognized when he was selected to join the Eagles, a nation wide group who raise money to foster junior golf. So both Pat and Shirley were able to travel to other clubs to play in Eagles tournaments. Just two days before his untimely death Pat and a group of local Eagles had traveled to Levin for a quadrangular golf tournament. 2008 was topped off when Pat won the Club’s Intermediate Championship. I’m told this was a highlight for Pat as it was the first time his name had appeared on the honours board. He has continued to play with the Veterans Group where he was well received, his name appears more than once on our trophies. Pat will be remembered as a person who contributed to all aspects of the Golf Club. His pursuit of excellence in all things could at times be frustrating, however, it was always difficult to successfully disagree with him.

To Shirley and your family we express our deepest sympathy at your sad loss, it is our loss too, and we of the Carterton Golf Club, thank you for the time that he gave us – he will be sorely missed.

VETS JUL 13

Lovely to see the sun after a frosty morning greeted the Vets for a further bisque par round in the Jack Cross Memorial Plate. It’s hard to be humble when, as Vets Captain, you have to read out your own name at the top of the results list. But Toby Hempleman did a nice job of that. What was a bit muffled though was when he announced his score, a massive 10 up! The howls of “swab him” and such like, just goes to show that high office offers no special protection from good-humoured barbs. Next on 7 up was Garry Smith, ahead of five players on 6 up – Ray White, Nigel Graham, Frank Delaney, Hugh Ryan & Graham Steffert, followed with a score of 5 up by Martin Sears, Geoff Rolls, Tim Carr and Peter Cottier. It was a Stableford round for the Reardon Cup. First was Ngarie Taylor with 34 points followed by Vicki Bain on 30. All Teed Up #16 Vicki Bain, New World NTP not struck and twos Vicki Bain.

JUN 5

The major contributor to golf for the week was the weather. There was no play for the ladies on Wednesday and the Queen’s Birthday Tournament on the 7 June was also cancelled. MEN: Saturday the fifth was the one bright day for the week. It certainly brought the players out with 53 men and 37 ladies turning out. There was a feeling of ‘get out there while you can’. The tournament for the day was the 3rd and final round of the Clareville Trophy. The Trophy was won by Greg Martin with a grand total of +10. The last round saw players being divided into two groups 0-16 and 17+. Group one was won by Jason Walker with +7, followed by Greg Martin +6, Piri Gillies +5, Warren Birdling, Mark Bowden and Nigel Bailey +3. Bevan Lambess, Nigel Bain and Pat Finn +2. VETS JUN 1

The competition on a overcast 1 June was the first round of the Jack Cross Memorial Trophy, Bisque Par. As placing was back in force it obviously made up for the heavy ground. +8 was the score to beat with Hugh Ryan, Chris Connor and Ash Braggins getting to that lever, followed by Bill Shakespeare +7. There were six others on +6, no names provided but I know one was Mike Holt! NTP #12 won by Max Bayliss, NTP #16 Ash Braggins.

In spite of the weather 32 players braved the elements. I suspect many got sucked in by the fine weather which lasted from about 10.30am to 1.30 pm when the heavens opened. (I was not brave enough). VETS MAY 11

Great weather and course conditions led to some good scores for the last round of the Autumn Cup, which is decided on the best 3 of 4 Stableford rounds. Ash Braggins and Bob Walker were joint leaders at the start of this round but it was Ash who came out on top, improving his cumulative total from 117 to 122 points. That was 4 to 5 clear of the next three –Chris Williams, Bob Walker & Dick Hymers. Congratulations to Ash. The way he’s playing it won’t be the last trophy with his name on this year. When giving the day’s results, acting captain Bill Shakespeare described the top score as “off the planet”. And who was it who stunned the earthlings with his score of 51 points? Trevor Clayton, yet another to hit his best Carterton score ever (79 off the stick); a performance summarised by just three little words – out lan dish! The back-to-earth scores that followed were :-42 - John Barry and Piri Gillies; Ash Braggins and Mike Holt 41, Chris Williams 39, Dick Hymers, Frank Delaney and Ian Brinkworth 38, James Moss, Russ Sadler and Jim Harris 37, Neil Stewart and Hugh Rolls 36. VETS MAY 4

The spell of good weather continued last Tuesday when the Vets played host to a contingent of nearly forty Manor Park Vets on their annual return visit. That doubled the size of the field (thanks to a few Carterton ladies) & the roughly even numbers allowed starter Bob Walker to pair up one from each club, thereby ensuring a shared distribution of prizes. In the Men’s field, Ash Braggins & Jim Knapp were the winning pair, well clear of the rest of the field with a combined total of 80 Stableford points. Next best on 73 were Nigel Graham with Arthur Williment, Russ Sadler with Peter Brooks & Graham Steffert with David Davis. Two teams scored 72 – Jim Douglas with Roger Morris & Bill Shakespeare with Stan Sarek. Next on 71 were Hugh Rolls with Ross Barwell, & Ken Prince with Costa Stellin, who were followed by seven teams all with a score of 70. By lot, the three to get the last of the goodies were Keith Williams with George French, Max Baylis with Adrian Brown, & Tim Carr with Denis Newton. For the Ladies, two pairings scored 67 points – Marie Platt with Gabrielle Morris, and Caral Rink with Sue Gibbs. Next with a score of 65, Corrie van Zanten with Kartini Davis, followed on 64 by Shirley Carew with Ngaire Taylor. VETS APR 27

After some minor handicap adjustments, a few of the ladies joined the Vets in a stroke round. Yvonne Baylis didn’t waste the opportunity returning a resounding score of net 60, in what appears to be her best round ever at Carterton. Well done Yvonne. Second, with a scorching net 65, was Bob Walker and in his case we can report that his 81 off the stick was indeed his best ever score at Carterton. This was well deserved given that Bob’s ancillary roles (Starter/Match Steward/Results Compiler, part-time Barman) inevitably divert some of his focus away from his golf round. Other scores: Chris Ranish 66, Mike Holt 67. Graham Steffert, Joe Skillcorn, Chris Slaughter, John Lett 68. Russ Sadler, Jack Jones 69. Chris Conner, Hugh Rolls, Peter Cottier Ralph Day 70. VETS APR 20

Carterton hosted the Linton Camp Vets on a nice fine day on a superbly manicured course that drew many complimentary comments from the visitors. The Don Louis trophy was at stake &, by a fairly clear margin, Carterton held on to it. The elements were right for some super scoring, topped by one super-duper score of 48 Stableford points from Keith Williams. Some think the Riversdale Rover must be taking performance-enhancing fruit juice, but not so. He just had a magic round. Next was Jack Jones with 44 points. This reporter was privileged to watch Jack score a sublime 29 points for the 1st nine, & then came the custard; only 15 points for the back nine. But watch out fellow competitors. Jack is back!

VETS APR 6

30 Vet golfers from Palmerston North took up Carterton Vets invitation to join them for a stableford round on Tuesday 6 April. That’s a pretty good turnout; indeed one more than the home team could muster. The weather had a few folk guessing earlier in the morning but new Vets Club Captain Toby Hempleman is developing a knack (just like his predecessor) of making a good call re the weather. A couple of light showers passed very quickly, just enough to subdue the sizzling scores of late. A full table of 24 prizes was shared 12 each. The day’s best score of 39 was registered by one of the visitors. The top dozen Carterton scores were –

38 points – Chris Williams, Ian Brinkworth and Bill Shakespeare.

The contest on 3 April was a Medal and Putting Cup. First mention should go to the winner of the Putting Cup with only 23 puts was Craig Wilson. (And the greens had only been cored about 10 days before). If you break it down that would theoretically be 5 two put greens and 13 one put greens. The other surprising thing was Craig didn’t appear in the competition winners. (Must be a story there.) First in the competition 0 – 17 with a gross 79, nett 63 was George Rink. Well done George. VETERANS 23 MAR

The Vets played a stableford round Tuesday 23 May. Weather fine and mild, & the course in tip top condition. Bob Walker and Ian Brinkworth both registered scores of 41 points but by drawn lot Bob took the top spot. He is certainly having a purple patch right now with his name popping up all over the place. Next on the scoresheet with 39 points were Ash Braggins & Dick Hymers, then a cluster of four with 38 – Ray White, Keith Rayner, Graham Steffert and Michael Holt. Chris Williams and Martin Sears both had 37, followed by Toby Hempleman, Peter Cottier, and Pat Carew with 35 points. The only twos reported were from Pat Carew and Ray White. Closest to the pin on #16 was Ash Braggins, and on #12 that man Bob Walker, again! The vets also welcomed “home” the much travelled Barrys – John and Annie – who are back for a couple of months. Surprisingly, neither made the winners prize-list, but they did know that they were back in the land of milk & honey when Annie won the meat raffle and JB won the vino. (Tim Carr)

“Sixty w h a t . . ?” was the disbelieving response that met the news of the winning score in the Vets stroke round last Tuesday, “You heard right, net 61.” And who was the golfer with this amazing score? VETERANS, 2 MAR... from Tim Carr

The Vets played a Stableford round in fine weather & on a beautifully groomed course. Plaudits to the new course maintenance/green-keeping team. Neil Stewart had the top score, a well compiled 45 points, followed by Chris Williams & Ash Braggins on 42, Graham Steffert on 41, and Pat Carew, John Lett and Dick Hymers all on 40. Bill Shakespeare & Keith Williams were 39, one shot better than Bob Walker, Ralph Day & Jim Harris. And finally with 37 points was newcomer James Moss. (Welcome James. Very prudent to fire just a reasonable score on joining the Vet’s ranks!) Closest to the pin on #6 was Chris Connor & on # 10 Bill Shakespeare. Ray White and Bill Armstrong each scored a two. In fact Bill’s second shot qualifies as shot of the day. Hole #3 is 340 metres long, a par 4 with a slight dogleg left. Bill hit a very good drive & chose a sand-iron for his second. Apparently the ball never looked like missing on its way to the cup. Stableford score for this eagle = 2 for 5. But that was not good enough to win the hole! His partner only scored one point for a team total of 6 while the opposing team had 4 and 3 pointers for a total of 7. A competitive group!

Junior Pennants 28 FEB

This was the first round of this years’ Junior Pennants tournament and (after some last minute recruitment) we were under way. Our team comprised of Katie Smart, Sarah Haskell, Benjamin Bailey and Brayden Mazey; a mix of experience and enthusiasm. Initially some of the players found the Mahunga greens a little slow, especially with the dew still being present at 9am on a Sunday morning, but they soon found their distance and started to slot the putts. As the day warmed up so did the golf and there were some good battles being had as well as some good banter. At the end of the rounds and after a tot-up of the scores it became apparent that we had scored a good victory winning 116 to 108 points. A good start to the campaign, so well done to our players. Next round at Carterton against Featherston Sunday 14th March, so if you see our youngsters on the course wish them well.

VETERANS - 23 Feb,from Tim Carr

Veterans Tuesday competition took the form of an Ambrose pairs event with a draw for partners (one high handicapper and one low). At stake was the much valued Graham Parker Memorial Trophy. Scoring by stableford. Top score with 45 points was the team of Pat Carew & Nigel Graham. This was no real surprise because Pat’s name is on the trophy for being part of the winning team in both of the last two years. (Some wag suggested that Pat’s just been lucky at drawing an in-form partner to carry him each year!) Next in line with 43 points were another couple of likely lads - Max Bayliss and Jim Douglas. They were followed by two teams each with 42 points - Russ Sadler with Ash Braggins, and Ray White with Frank Delaney. Behind them with 40 points were 3 pairs vying for the last 2 places. A draw by lot saw George Rink & Bill Shakespeare, plus Ralph Day & Neil Stewart collecting the goodies while the unfortunate pairing to miss out was Mike Holt & Hugh Rolls. And who drew the scorecard for that pair to miss out? Why it was Mike, just showing what a magnanimous bloke our new club reporter is! Nearest to the pin on # 6 was Barry Hare, and on hole # 9, Nigel Graham.

RESULTS FOR 20 FEBRUARY 2010

The competition for the day was a Par round. The course must be getting a little drier either that or the members golf is improving. Results: +7 Graham Hutchby (Graham is a member of the greens staff so probably has quite a bit of local knowledge); +5 Ray Clarke; + 4 Barry Hare; + 4 David Wills; +3 Stu Ingham; +3 Jim Harris; +3 Frank Delany; +3 Trevor Clayton; +3 Bill Shakespeare; +2 Richard Chapman; +1 Greg Martin. Holes in Two: Some red hot putters again this week with 10 two's. Frank Delany must have a golden wand with 3, yes 3 holes in two; for the rest they had to settle with one each: Ray Clarke; Ash Braggens; Greg Martin; Dave Sadler; Eric Collings; David Wills and Stu Ingham. Snake Eyes on #10 Colin Larsen, All Teed Up nearest the pin in two on #16 Eric Collings, Publisher nearest the pin on #6 Dave Sadler, Royal Oak nearest the pin on #15 Graham Hutchby.

RESULTS FOR 21 FEBRUARY 2010.

The round was played in conjunction with the South Wairarapa Working Mens Club tournament,. so there was a reasonable field for a Sunday. For members it was a Best Nett round. Frank Delany (He of the 3 holes in Three yesterday) nett 68, Chris Ramish nett 68, David Wills nett 69 and Mike Holt nett 69. There was only one hole in two (funny game golf, when you look at yesterday's result), Dave wills manage to snare 10 vouchers!!

VETERANS Tuesday 16 Feb

Boosted by a visiting group of hard case golfers from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, a good turnout of Vets played a Stableford round. Mike Newport has finally got the hang of his new spectacles and was a clear cut winner with 45 points. Mike’s now off on another golfing odyssey, apparently targeting a Veterans tournament somewhere up country. Heaven help them. Next was Garry Smith with 40 points (a reminder to not play this guy for money), followed by Peter Cottier and Jack Jones on 39. Ash Braggins (38), then a couple of Aussies(38,37). Playing to their handicaps with 36 points were Barry Hare, Chris Williams, Yvonne Bayliss & Toby Hempleman. Five shared the pot for holes in two; two visitors took one each, as did Mike Newport, Toby Hempleman, & Barry Hare. Barry was also nearest the pin on #6 while Max Bayliss took that prize for #16. Although there have been no Vets reports for a few months, our radar has picked up some noteworthy snippets involving three of them. First, Trevor Clayton scored a hole in one, on # 15, surprisingly enough his first ace in 41 years of golfing. Second, Ralph Day “hit his age” i.e. his gross score equalled his age- a pretty rare achievement & a first for Ralph. It would of course be improper to publish Ralph’s age but we can say his gross score was 85. And finally Chris Connor, in a flourish of swashbuckling misadventure, sent his trundler, clubs, balls and all, into a muddy water-race, then hopped in to rescue them. The actual sequence of events is not too clear, but the photos pinned to the club-house notice board captured the soggy, hilarious, highlights.
